Basic Role Playing System that had been published
by Chaosium, Inc. in 1980/1981. It is the perfect
introductory rolegame for beginners. It features an excellent, time-tested game system,
easily-understood rules, many examples of play, and a fun introductory scenario.
It can be ordered through Chaosium's
web-site.
The ever watchful eyes of the members of the Basic RPS mailing list have spotted a few
differences between the 2002 version and the original 1980/1981 version of the Basic
Role Playing System:
- Starting basic skill percentages are very different. For the most part they are lower then the
original scores. The new score is listed first, followed by the original in parentheses.
Jumping 25% (45%)
Climbing 40% (55%)
Listening 25% (45%)
Spot Hidden Item 25% (25%)
Move Quietly 20% (25%)
Throw 25% (45%)
Fist 50% (45%)
Hide 20% (55%)
First Aid 30% (45%)
- A list of suggested passive SIZ values are given for use on the resistance table.
- On successfully making an experience roll the character gains 1d10% to his skill
(5% in the original rules).
- Healing and use of First Aid have been expanded and clarified:
on a successful skill roll, First Aid heals 1d3 HP, on an unsuccessful
roll the character bandages the wounds and the victim may then heal naturally.
Natural Healing heals 1d3 HP a week.
- When a character has 2 HP left (1 HP in the original rules), he goes unconscious.
- The damage done by a javelin is now 1d6 (1d10 in the original) and the javelin's breakage
points are listed as 10.
- Impaling damage is certainly not as deadly as before and is now the damage of the weapon
rolled twice (i.e., 1d8+1 + 1d8+1). In the original, it was max damage plus another damage
roll (i.e., 9 + 1d8+1).
